SCO Summit Opens in Bishkek as Kyrgyzstan Concludes Its Chairmanship

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit is opening today in Bishkek, bringing together the leaders and representatives of member states, invited countries and several international organisations, including the United Nations.

The meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State is being held under Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship. A high-level meeting in the “SCO Plus” format is also scheduled as part of the summit.

The participants are expected to discuss international and regional developments, the Organisation’s priorities for the next stage of its development, and ways to expand cooperation across several areas. These include politics, trade and the economy, transport and logistics, digital development, environmental issues, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties.

The summit is being held as the SCO marks its 25th anniversary and comes at the end of Kyrgyzstan’s term as chair of the Organisation.

A package of documents is expected to be adopted following the meetings. The key document will be the Bishkek Declaration marking the SCO’s 25th anniversary, which is intended to set out the Organisation’s development priorities for the coming years.

The event is being covered by around 250 local and 800 international media representatives.

Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has arrived in Bishkek to participate in the SCO summit. During his visit, he also attended the official opening ceremony of the VI World Nomad Games.

The opening ceremony of the VI World Nomad Games took place the previous day at the newly built Bishkek Arena. The event was attended by the presidents of around 20 countries, as well as heads of international organisations, including the United Nations.
