Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed hope that US President Donald Trump can help end the war in Ukraine before winter. Deutsche Welle reported on the meeting and Zelenskyy’s comments.
Zelenskyy and Trump met on September 22 in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The Ukrainian president described the talks as “positive and productive.”
According to Zelenskyy, the two sides discussed possible de-escalation measures that could open the way to diplomacy. He said both the United States and Ukraine want the war to end before winter.
Ukraine ready for an energy ceasefire
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to stop striking Russian energy facilities if Russia also halted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
“We are ready for any format of an energy ceasefire,” the Ukrainian president said, adding that he did not know whether Moscow would agree to such an arrangement.
Zelenskyy also reiterated that he was ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at any time. He said Trump could organize a trilateral meeting involving the leaders of the United States, Ukraine and Russia to discuss key issues and seek an end to the war.
Zelenskyy discusses Patriot production
The talks also covered Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Zelenskyy said the United States and Ukraine were continuing work on a project to produce interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems in Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian president, the project is intended as a long-term initiative. The two leaders also discussed a winter air defense package for Ukraine.
