Ukraine says Moscow oil refinery was hit in overnight attack

Ukraine’s Defense Forces said they struck the Gazprom Neft Moscow Oil Refinery in Moscow’s Kapotnya district during the night of September 20. A large fire broke out at the facility.

Ukraine’s General Staff said the attack damaged the AVT-6 primary oil refining unit, a comprehensive oil processing unit and an isomerization unit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces had targeted one of Russia’s key oil industry facilities in the Moscow region, as well as a logistics facility.

“These are billions of dollars that support the military machine,” Zelenskyy said.

According to the Ukrainian president, the attack involved FP-1, RZ-100, MICH-2000, Palyanytsia, Vendetta, February, Bars, Flamingo, January and Pelican. Zelenskyy thanked personnel from Ukraine’s Security Service, Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, Main Intelligence Directorate and Foreign Intelligence Service.

The Moscow Oil Refinery is one of Russia’s major oil-processing facilities. It processes crude oil and produces gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, fuel oil and other petroleum products. The refinery has an annual processing capacity of about 12 million tonnes of crude oil.

Ukraine’s General Staff said the facility is also involved in supplying the needs of Russia’s armed forces.

Earlier, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported a massive drone attack on the Russian capital. According to him, more than 1,600 drones were heading toward Moscow, with several reaching the territory of the Moscow Oil Refinery.
