Death Toll from Nepal Floods Surpasses 1,200

The death toll from a devastating landslide and flooding in Nepal has risen to 1,204, according to the country’s national authority responsible for disaster risk reduction and response.

Earlier reports put the number of fatalities at 1,127. Around 4,200 people remain missing, while nearly 12,000 have been rescued.

The disaster struck northern Nepal on August 26. The severe flooding was triggered by an avalanche near the Nepal-China border, about 20 kilometers northeast of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing.

The resulting flow of rock and debris moved rapidly along the river channel for more than 70 kilometers, destroying settlements and inundating a large area.
