Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced a ceasefire on May 8–9 in connection with the celebration of Victory Day. The ministry said it expects Ukraine to follow a similar approach.

At the same time, Russia warned that attempts to disrupt the celebrations could result in strikes on targets in Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a “silence regime” starting from midnight on May 6, stating that Kyiv would respond symmetrically to Russia’s actions.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine had not received any official proposals regarding a May 9 ceasefire.

“Human life is more important than any celebration,” he said.
