Turkey plans to seek an Interpol red notice for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of a domestic criminal investigation into an incident involving activists attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Ankara has been among Israel’s strongest critics over its military operation in Gaza. Turkish authorities have previously issued domestic arrest warrants for Netanyahu in connection with the war and have repeatedly called for international action over what they describe as violations of human rights and international law. Israel rejects those accusations.
The case is linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla, which attempted to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid. In May, Israeli forces opened fire on at least two vessels as the flotilla was sailing toward the enclave. Previous attempts to deliver aid had also been intercepted by Israel in international waters.
Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said on X that arrest warrants had been issued for Netanyahu and another suspect. The charges include genocide, crimes against humanity and torture as part of a case involving 35 people over the interception of the vessels in international waters.
Gurlek said the Justice Ministry had asked the Interior Ministry to request Interpol red notices for Netanyahu and the other suspect.
“In line with the arrest warrants issued against Benjamin Netanyahu … our justice ministry has requested that the interior ministry issue (Interpol) red notices for them so that they may be sought internationally,” Gurlek said.
